The cottage was built as a home for needleworkers, who worked in the nearby needle factory.

Hathersage itself was first mentioned in the Doomsday Book and was used as a trade route and there are plenty of famous landmarks on the doorstep such as Chatsworth House and the market town of Bakewell.
